Merchant Adventurer’s Hall Wedding Photography York

Kate & Jamie married at The Merchant Adventurer’s Hall in York in November. The venue is open to the public during the day meaning that weddings take place in the afternoon, ensuring a relaxed start to the day with no early starts involved. Marrying in winter in the afternoon does pose some obstacles as the light diminishes fairly quickly, with the sun setting on this day around 4pm. With lots of experience of working in low light however, challenges like this make my work even more fun as I look for usable light in unexpected places.

I met with Kate and her bridal party in the morning at a cottage that they rented just outside of York and spent a couple of hours with them as they all got ready. There was a great energy as everyone was busy and this meant that I could get straight on with being the fly on the wall. Kate and her bridesmaids are also nurses, which was my old profession before becoming a full time photographer, and this helped to break the ice immediately.

I met with Jamie and the arriving guests at the Hall and was well placed to capture Kate’s arrival by vintage bus. The ceremony took place in the main Hall which provides space for over one hundred guests as was the case with this wedding. After the ceremony we had about 10 minutes of usable daylight so completed a set of family group shots and some portraits of the bride and groom within this time. After the meal and speeches, the evening reception took a leisurely pace, and I was booked to stay until midnight which meant that I was present from the very beginning of the day until the lights came on and the weary guests sought taxi’s with rest of Yorks party goers.

Here is a small selection of photographs from Kate & Jamie’s Wedding that demonstrate my style of wedding photography.
